On this page you will learn:
What is an environmental audit?
An environmental audit is a special report that shows how your company’s installations impact the environment. In this report, we check if everything is functioning as it should, identify any issues, and suggest improvements to make your operations more environmentally friendly.
The final report defines the proper operation of the installation or any potential flaws in its operation. Simultaneously, it provides proposals for changes in applied techniques if they indicate a negative impact on the environment.
Furthermore, it outlines methods for preventing and reducing introduced pollutants, the necessity of establishing a restricted use area, and proposes adjustments to comply with current legal and formal requirements in the field of environmental protection.

What is the purpose of an environmental audit?
The main goal is to check whether a company’s activities have a negative impact on the environment. If a negative impact is identified, the audit helps in planning actions that can minimize or eliminate this impact.
Importantly, there is not always a requirement to conduct an environmental audit. The decision depends on the nature of the company’s activities and its impact on the environment. It is the environmental protection authority that determines whether and to what extent an environmental audit is needed, and in relation to which technical devices, their assemblies, or structures that may not be considered as such.
Who is obligated to undergo an environmental audit?
An environmental audit particularly applies to installations that, according to the Regulation of the Council of Ministers, have a significant impact on the environment. Other types of activities, not necessarily related only to the operation of installations, may also be subject to it. This could involve roads, railway lines, tram lines, among others. In these cases, the environmental protection authority determines the requirements and scope of the environmental audit.
What should an ecological review include?
An ecological review of an installation should include:
- Description of the installation:
a) Type, size, location, and technical condition.
b) Land area or building structure.
c) Technologies used.
d) Adjacent residential and public utility facilities.
e) Adjacent heritage sites protected under heritage preservation laws.
f) Adjacent areas or objects protected under nature conservation, forestry, water law, and spa and health resort regulations. - Assessment of the environmental impact of the installation, including in the event of a serious industrial accident.
- Description of actions aimed at preventing and mitigating environmental impact.
- Comparison of the technology used with technology that meets the requirements specified in Article 143.
- Any need for establishing such an area, its boundaries, and restrictions on use.
- Concise summary in non-specialist language of the information contained in the review.
- Name(s) of the person(s) preparing the review.

The process of conducting an ecological review, step by step:
